Thanks for speaking to A Texas Guide, Fernanda! Nice to meet you! Please tell us a little bit about who you are.
¡Hola! It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Fernanda Ramos Garcés, and I hail from the lively capital city of Puerto Rico, San Juan. A little over three years ago, I embarked on an exciting new chapter here in Houston, Texas, where I’m now part of the meteorology team at KXLN Univision 45. I’m 33 years old, and I’m absolutely loving the diverse weather patterns and challenges that Texas has to offer!
Can you explain exactly what you do and what your mission is within that work?
I’m currently an On-Air Meteorologist working at KXLN Univision 45 Houston. My mission is to provide accurate and accessible weather information to diverse communities across multiple cities in the United States. I aim to not only inform and educate the public about upcoming weather conditions but also to impart a sense of preparedness and safety.
I also serve as Chair of Puertorriqueños en las Ciencias Atmosféricas y Meteorología (PCAM) with the mission to foster a supportive and empowering community for over 300 members and future meteorologists. I work towards providing resources, opportunities, and guidance to help them excel in the field. Additionally, I’m a member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Committee on Hispanic and Latinx Advancement (CHALA). By contributing as a Broadcast Sector Ambassador, I’m committed to enhancing communication and engagement within the meteorological community. I play part in initiatives that promote diversity and inclusivity, ensuring that weather information is accessible to all.
Through these roles, my overarching mission is to bridge gaps, empower aspiring meteorologists, and ultimately contribute to a safer and more weather- and climate-resilient society.
The most challenging part of my work is ensuring that the weather information I provide is accurate, accessible and easily understood by diverse communities. It’s crucial to convey complex meteorological concepts in a way that’s relatable to everyone.
On the other hand, the most fulfilling aspect is the impact I can make. When I see how the information I share helps people prepare for and stay safe during weather events, it’s incredibly rewarding. Additionally, in my leadership roles at PCAM and AMS CHALA, creating supportive communities and promoting diversity in the field of meteorology brings a sense of fulfillment and purpose to my work.

Tell us a little bit about your back story in terms of your heritage and what made you want to become a meteorologist.
I grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where I developed a deep appreciation for the dynamic and unpredictable weather patterns that are characteristic of the Caribbean. This early fascination with meteorology led me to pursue a degree in Physics and Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.
After graduation, I had the privilege of working as a Science Communicator at the EcoExploratorio: Science Museum of Puerto Rico while simultaneously serving as an On-Air Meteorologist for a local channel (WIPR). Following that, I embarked on a new journey as I put a pause on my broadcasting career to serve as a forecaster for the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan, PR. This transition allowed me to fulfill my dream of enhancing preparedness and awareness during critical decision-making processes in my community by providing reliable, science-backed weather information.
Moving to Houston, Texas was a significant step in my career as it brought me closer to a diverse and vivid community, offering a unique perspective on weather-related challenges. Being bilingual has been a tremendous asset in my role as an On-Air Meteorologist. It allows me to effectively communicate complex meteorological information to a wide audience, ensuring that crucial weather updates reach our Hispanic communities.
My Puerto Rican heritage also plays a significant role in my work and daily life. It provided me a sense of resilience and adaptability, qualities that are invaluable in the ever-changing field of meteorology. Additionally, my background has fostered a deep sense of community and a commitment to serving diverse populations, both of which are at the core of my mission as a meteorologist.
Travel has been another enriching aspect of my journey. Exploring different climates and experiencing various weather phenomena first hand has provided me with a broader perspective on meteorology, enabling me to better understand and anticipate the unique challenges faced by communities across different regions.
Altogether, my heritage, background, and experiences have shaped me into a meteorologist who is passionate about making weather information accessible to all, regardless of language or cultural background. It’s a gratifying endeavor, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the safety and well-being of the communities I serve.

What is special about Texas in your opinion compared to other states?
What makes Texas truly special, in my opinion, compared to other states, is the dynamic fusion of cultures. Here, you experience a unique blend of Hispanic and American influences that create a one-of-a-kind way of life. It’s not just about a dynamic and enriching lifestyle, but also being part of a warm and welcoming community that’s eager to share in the joy of new beginnings. This cultural amalgamation sets Texas apart, offering an experience you won’t find quite the same anywhere else.
Why did you stay in Texas as opposed to moving away?
I chose Texas because of the incredible opportunity it offers me to serve a large Spanish-speaking community.
