Waco might be smack in the middle of Texas, but it’s anything but middle-of-the-road. This Central Texas city has Ice Age mammoths, a world-famous market, a fantastic zoo, and the birthplace of a soft drink with a cult following. Basically, it’s a family road trip waiting to happen.
Sitting right off I-35 between Dallas and Austin, Waco is an easy weekend getaway. Here’s how to spend it.
Waco Mammoth National Monument
Ready to meet some Ice Age giants? At Waco Mammoth National Monument, visitors can see the fossil remains of Columbian mammoths right where they were discovered. A covered dig shelter lets you look down on the site from an elevated walkway.
Kids (and plenty of grown-ups) think it’s one of the coolest places in Texas. Walking trails on the grounds let you stretch your legs too.

Magnolia Market at the Silos
You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the two giant silos downtown. Magnolia Market, created by Chip and Joanna Gaines of HGTV’s Fixer Upper, has shopping, a bakery, food trucks, and a big lawn where kids can play.
Tip: Weekends get busy, so go early and grab a treat from the bakery before the lines build.
